Intro to me

April 4, 2025

Hello, I'm Ryan, and I want to help you quit your job.

For a bit of background, I've been a software engineer for about 15 years now. I've worked for companies both big and small, and the experiences haven't been great. Personally I've experienced 50-60+ hour work weeks, encroachments on personal time (working evenings or even nights, weekends, getting called on PTO, etc...), employees treated more like resources than people, and people who gave years of their lives helping a company grow only to be discarded like a broken piece of equipment.

This is just what I saw with my own two eyes in my few years of employment. I know there are many people with worse stories out there. I read headlines all the time about mass layoffs at companies, while the executives continue to rake in the cash. And with the current state of affairs, I don't imagine this will get any better.

This year, when faced with the possibility that my current employment might be coming to an end, I realized that I desperately do NOT want to go get a new job. I don't want to get a new boss, to learn all the bureaucracy and politics at the new place, to negotiate my time away from work and the money I need to live, to have to find people who are okay with me working remotely, and for having five kids, meaning I need a lot of flexibility in my work schedule.

I knew months ago that I would need to start building something of my own. Not just to avoid all that stuff above, but to help pay my bills as well. For several years we have struggled to make ends meet, which to me is crazy for two adults with full-time salaried positions at good companies. It has become clear to me that continuing to rely on employment by otherse is not a sustainable way to secure our futures.

So, my plan is to build a personal brand (this) teaching people how to quit their job, by demonstrating how I am quitting mine in real-time. I'm going to try to build a variety of free and paid tools, apps, and games, then market them through various social media channels via my personal brand. I'm going to grow an online presence, an inter-connected network of utilities and resources for people who want to quit their job too, but maybe don't know how, or are too afraid to take that leap.

I'll be posting across all my social media channels different types of updates on all the things I'm working on. You can find links to all of them in the footer below. Be sure to follow me on your favorite ones so you can see all of my remarkable failures (and maybe some wins along the way too). If you have questions or comments, feel free to reach out to me on any of those platforms, or email me directly.

I'm really excited to build all of this in public! When I look back in a year, I want to be proud of the body of work I've built here.

FYI I've just launched my first app, Time Protector and it is now open for beta access. There's a link on the landing page to request access. Right now it's limited to Windows/Chrome users, but will be opening it up for other browsers/OSes in the near future.

Thanks for reading!
